Dandy’s World Beginner’s Guide

Dandy's World Hiding Behind Crates

Dandy’s World is a cooperative horror game where players have to fill up machines while evading spooky characters. I’d loosely compare it to a popular game off of Roblox called Dead by Daylight. Even though there isn’t an enemy player or anywhere near the same level of violence. If you’re unsure where to start, this beginner’s guide will teach you how to play Dandy’s World.

Getting Started in Dandy’s World

Picking Your First Character

Dandy's World - Toon Character Selection Window

When you first start, you’ll have a choice of two characters named Poppy and Boxten. While I like Boxten for completing objectives quicker, Poppy is also an okay choice. Afterward, you’ll be in the lobby where you can team up with other players and then take an elevator down into a game.

Once the countdown finishes, the elevator will take you to floor one, where the action begins. You’ll need to work with your team to fill machines while avoiding enemy characters known as Twisteds. Once a Twisted hits you three times without healing, you’ll lose and have to return to the lobby to play again. So try to stay out of their sight! But, if they see you, you can run behind a wall or shelf to hide. For those on PC, you can use the shift button to sprint but it drains your stamina. Make sure you stay out of their vision long enough that they go away.

If a Twisted isn’t chasing you, you’ll want to look for items or fill machines. There are many items but it will tell you what each one does when picking them up. Otherwise, here’s what you need to know about machines in Dandy’s World.

What to Know About Filling Machines

Dandy's World - Filling a Machine

Each machine looks like a capsule on the wall. If it has a red light, it isn’t full yet, whereas if it has a green light, it’s done. Once you walk up to a red one, you start filling it by pressing E. But, make sure you pay attention as there are quick time events. This means a bar will appear where you’ll need to press spacebar as a red line moves into the white or gold zone. If you miss, it’ll make a loud sound and attract nearby Twisteds.

I recommend turning your camera toward where Twisteds can come from while filling a machine. This helps you see them coming since you’re vulnerable while filling. If you see one coming, you can click the “STOP EXTRACTING” button near the bottom of your screen to hop off.

Once every machine is full, a countdown will start before the elevator you arrived in leaves. Make sure to get back to the elevator in time if you don’t want to be left behind! Some players will return to the elevator early if they know someone is working on the last machine.

Dandy’s Shop and Picking Upgrades

Dandy's World - Dandy's Shop Inside the Elevator

If the floor number is an even number while in the elevator, a shop will appear where you can spend Tapes on items. Occasionally, you may see someone say they’re doing a dandy run where you’re not supposed to buy any items. And if the floor is an odd number, everyone can vote for an upgrade. For example, gaining more stamina or getting a random free item on every floor.

Those are the basics for everything you need to know to get started in Dandy’s World. If you’d like more advice, check out our list of the best tips and tricks.

Monetization in Dandy’s World

Dandy's World Ichor Monetization Prices

The in-game currency Ichor is for buying new characters, skins, and trinkets. Roblox players can spend real money to get Ichor as well as temporary event currencies like Ornaments. While you do get Ichor from playing and via redeemable codes, it can still be a rough grind. For context, the most expensive character is about $12.50 while the cheapest is just under $1.

You don’t need to spend real money to get characters, trinkets, or skins. But you will have to play a lot to unlock them otherwise. One choice I’m disappointed in the developer for making is emptying your Ornaments when the event ends. I’d prefer if they carried it over to the next holiday or converted it to Ichor. Otherwise, you’re completely losing any real money you may have spent. Which is a bit exploitative.
