If you’re struggling to stay alive in Diablo 4, you’ll probably find yourself wondering how to get more potions. Whether you’re in a dungeon or fighting the world boss, you’ll need to get your health back when that hard hit comes in. We’ve got the answers to how to get more, how to upgrade your max amount, and other useful tips too.
For those of you genuinely just wondering where to get more potions and not necessarily increase your maximum, here’s the quick answer. You can pick up large glowing red potions off the ground from a variety of sources. Such as breaking objects, defeating monsters, and getting past boss health bar phases.
How to Get More Potions in Diablo 4
By default when you first start playing you’ll have a maximum of four health potions that you can use. Before you can raise that limit, you’ll need to essentially just complete a lot of miscellaneous content. Such as exploring new areas, completing side dungeons, doing side quests, and even stuff like finding the Altars of Lilith.
Each action mentioned among others will contribute to your total renown for a region. Eventually, this leads to rewards like bonus experience, gold, skill points, and even in some cases, potion charges. Those charges will increase your maximum limit so you can heal even more.
The first region Fractured Peaks provides one potion charge at the second reward. You’ll also get bonus experience and a small chunk of 10,000 gold alongside it. Once you’ve unlocked a skill point or potion charge this way, you’ll unlock it for other characters not playing on hardcore.
This is a nice way to give your new characters a slightly quicker start even if you’ve only completed the Fractured Peaks so far. However, as players explore further into Diablo 4, we’re sure there are bound to be more useful region rewards.
The later region rewards for Fractured Peaks also increase the maximum amount of Obols you can carry. As well as providing four Paragon Points. If you’re not sure how Obols work we do have a guide for the new currency too.
Aside from how and where to get more potions in Diablo 4, we’ve also included the next section to briefly explain how upgrading them works too. This is necessary for when you start working through tougher content like Strongholds and even fighting The Butcher.
How to Upgrade Healing Potions in Diablo 4
For those that may not realize how healing potions work in Diablo 4, they have two ways of healing. First, they give an instant chunk of health and then heal an extra 35% over three seconds. It doesn’t matter if this is the first potion you got or the Superior Healing Potion at level 90. They both work the same way.
However, as you upgrade your potion, that small chunk of instant health will increase. This is why it’s important to upgrade so you can survive when an enemy knocks you to low health. Especially if you’re fighting a world boss with brutal damage over time abilities.
Fortunately, you can start upgrading healing potions relatively early in Diablo 4. Within the first hour or so you’ll likely reach Kyovashad where the Alchemist is. As long as you have the right materials and level requirement, you can speak with her to upgrade.
This process requires materials that you can gather in the environment as well as some you need to get from enemies. You can even craft elixirs at an Alchemist to get buffs and experience boosts. For example, a Weak Elixir of Cold Resistance provides 15% Cold Resist and 5% Extra Experience for 30 minutes.
That’s all there is to this guide on how to get more potions, where to get more, how to upgrade them, and plenty of other questions you could ask. Make sure you take full advantage of your potions so you can stay alive. If you’re not sure when to upgrade, a small arrow will appear near your potions when it’s possible.

This is a very helpful post, i wasn't completely sure how potions worked or even how you get more. I honestly didn't know about speaking with the alchemist, it was alot to take in during the beta within a fairly short time.
