Valheim – Do You Get Materials Back?

Wondering if you get materials back in Valheim when destroying buildings? This guide answers that question and more. At some point, you may need to destroy a wall or structure with your hammer. Or you might just get unlucky and have a roaming enemy knock down a torch.

The quick answer to this question is that you do get materials back. It doesn’t seem to matter how a wall or structure is destroyed for you to get everything back. Regardless of whether an enemy destroys something or you do, the items will drop on the floor for grabbing. This is especially useful if you’re traveling far away from your main base with a boat or a portal. Fortunately, you don’t need to worry if a pesky troll destroys your portal or an enemy destroys your boat. But, fair warning, if your boat is destroyed at sea, many of those items will sink. However, certain ones like wood will still float on the surface.

So long as you’re not about to be encumbered, you will automatically pick up the destroyed items when walking over them. If picking up an item off the floor will put you over the default 300 weight limit, it won’t be automatically grabbed. You’ll need to grab it manually by looking at it. However, be warned, this will make your character encumbered and move extremely slowly. Until you’re no longer encumbered, you won’t recover any stamina. This is definitely dangerous if you’re in a hostile area like the Black Forest or Swamp.
